The new racing season is underway and it was pleasing to see one of Curraghmore's 2015 New Zealand Bloodstock graduates return to form.
Theanswermyfriend (High Chaparral) kicked off his 2018-19 season with a win when successful in the VRC Member Damian Cubela Handicap (1400m) at Flemington on Saturday.
The $70,0000 Karaka purchase for Aquanita turned in a bold front-running performance and staved-off the challenge of the fast-closing Night’s Watch, with Odeon finishing third.
The winner and runner-up were both prepared by Darren Weir.
“Probably Theanswermyfriend just had the fitness edge because he’s had a couple of runs. He was ready to go forward today. He’d been getting in behind and doing a few things wrong, but today we thought his fitness level was ready to be in the first four.
“He landed in front and rolled along nicely and kicked well.”
This was Theanswermyfriend's first win since joining the Weir stable in May.
Also at Flemington, the much talked about Gold Mag (Savabeel) lined up in the VRC Member James Hibberd (1200m) as race favourite off the back to two starts for two wins since his debut in June.
It was an excellent run up the straight to run second to the more experienced Choisborder by a length.
Bred and raced by P H Grieve and B C Thomas Gold Mag was raised at Curraghmore and looks to be and exciting prospect for the spring.
